Let Fly a Chinese Lantern - a Centuries-Old Tradition now Being Discovered in the West

One doesn't so much "let fly" a as gently release it from your open palms and let it float off on a gentle breeze; it is a tradition which is centuries old in China but is only in recent years being discovered in the west. Used for centuries by the various military entities of Chinese warlords and emperors, it passed into the hands of civilians as it was discarded by the military and became a tradition at cultural and religious festivities, as well as at the New Year and other special dates in the Chinese calendar.

Traditionally, Chinese lanterns are painted in bright colours used for decorative purposes, commonly painted with Chinese art and calligraphy motifs which are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring about good fortune for the person or persons releasing them. This probably explains the reasons why so many are released at weddings and at the New Year, in the hope of bringing good fortune to all; take a walk round Chinatown in London and they are a common sight, hanging outside businesses and restaurants, for the same reasons.

Chinese lanterns are available in many different shapes and combinations of colours, and one can have them adorned with names, congratulatory messages such as "Happy Retirement", "Happy Birthday", or a celebration of freedom from the tyranny of marriage at one's divorce -- the options are only as limited as your imagination. Each lantern one buys is entirely biodegradable and, unlike some Chinese lantern examples, is not held together by lengths of wire; this is especially important for their eventual landfall.

After the lantern has been released and the candle finally burns out, it obviously has to fall to earth somewhere. When these lanterns do, there are no sharp pieces of wire which can be ingested by animals -- all that remains and returns to earth is a paper lantern and a paper candle holder. Start thinking ahead to your next celebration or festival on the horizon, or maybe start planning for a mass release on New Year's Eve night at the! stroke of midnight; remember, only your imagination is the limit.

Lecture 1 - Introduction and Pre-Han Pictorial Art

I begin by introducing my three major teachers, and go on to outline the background of the series: early attempts at histories of Chinese painting, photographing and cataloguing projects carried out in the 1960s-70s, changing ideas about how art history should be constructed and written. I introduce Ernst Gombrich as a model for the kind of art-historical narrative I will attempt, but also emphasize the strong tradition of critical and historical writing in China that underlies my account. This first lecture ends with a brief introduction to early pictorial art in China: Neolithic painted pots, hunting-style bronzes, the earliest paintings on silk from Changsha.

In the Realm of the Flower Phoenix

Chinese character writing is a highly evolved discipline that relies as much on artistic craftsmanship, as it does on literary composition.
